The Great Pyramids of Giza

We were on our way through Cairo, the capital city of this great ancient country called Egypt, the traffic was

pushing their way past us on the road through the city, with constant sounds of horns beeping echoing down the city streets, in the distance I could see these great triangular shaped rocks shooting up into the sky, these great big triangles are a good example of the wonders of our planet, the Pyramids.

The Pyramids are something that we have all heard of in our lives growing up, we would see them in pictures, on the TV or learn about them in school, now I am heading towards them, this is one experience in my life I never though would happen.

As I stepped off the bus I was amazed by the view of these magnificent monuments of Egypt, the sun was shining onto the golden brown rocks of the Pyramids, this experience though could of been better, there was just constant crowds of people coming up to you trying to sell little pieces of souvenirs which were constantly in your face, I was trying to look at the Pyramids and I would have around 15-20 people hovering around me all trying to sell the same thing, I looked over to an elderly gentleman who was trying to take shots of the Pyramids with his camera but every time he pressed to take a picture, someone would walk in the way of the lens trying to sell him something, you could see that they had crossed the line with him and he screamed out to the hovering men f**k off.

Finally away from the constant hassle of the sales men I was finally within touching distance of the Pyramids, the size of them was magnificent, looking directly up them was such a great view, the sun looked like it was at touching point of the very tip of the Pyramid, I took a picture with my camera and a man who was in the shot on top of his camel shouted over to me “excuse me sir”, I replied to him with a jolly “hello there” hoping that I was going to have a nice chat with a local, “you took a picture of me and my camel, you now pay” and with that he held open his hand towards me, “I don’t think so, this is a public place I am allowed to take pictures here”, the situation was starting to get a bit out of hand, everyone was after money, he got off his camel and demanded that I pay him money, “no, I am not going to give you any money, now go away”, he started to walk over to me and put the rope of his camel in my hand, I was all confused trying to work out the situation of what was happening, I couldn’t understand how I went from arguing with the guy about money and then end up holding his camel, “this is your camel now, your problem” he said as he stuck his hands in the air, “I can’t have your camel, I got to go back home to the UK”, for three minuets I was trying to convince him to take his camel back, but he wasn’t having any of it so I just let his camel go to wonder away, the guy started yelling some Arabic words towards me chasing after his camel.

What was amazing about the Pyramids was that all three of them were perfectly lined, how could the ancient Egyptians do such accurate work in the days when technology wasn’t that good, in fact I don’t think people of today could do what they did even with technology, there was smaller Pyramids next to the Great Pyramids, I climbed down through the tunnel, clenching on to the wood that was pinned into the rock, it led into a tomb where once a coffin had been, all what was left was a hole in the ground in the shape of a coffin, I decided to go and lay down in the hole, it felt weird that a body of a great man was once laying here, I was trying to picture the past of the Egyptians in that room as they placed the body in this tomb.

I recommend to everybody that travels, to take a trip and see these magnificent monuments, as long as you don’t mind large crowds of people trying to get money out of you, if you really want to experience the Pyramids on your own, try heading at dusk when the Pyramids are closed to the public, I heard people had

bribed the guards on letting them into the Pyramids without the hassle.
